How to perform plain turning and chamfering operation

How to perform plain turning and chamfering operation

Plain turning and chamfering operation

Plain turning and chamfering are the operations which are used for the production of cylindrical elements by removal of metal such as pin, holder of the workpiece

For any product requirement where a reduction of the diameter of the workpiece is required, plain turning and chamfering operations can be used

Here is the experiment sheet for plain turning and chamfering operations for beginners

Now let’s look at the proper manual to perform the operations on the lathe machine

AIM :

To perform plain-turning and chamfering operations on the lathe

Plain Turning and chamfering operation

THEORY :

plain turning operation :

plain turning operation is defined as a process of removal of material by reducing the diameter of a workpiece to produce cylindrical objects

Materials required :

Mild steel round bar of size 30mm dia and length 100 mm

Equipment required :

Lathe machine fitted with 3 jaw self-centering chuck

Tools required :

Single point cutting tool of HSS/ carbide tipped tool

The procedure :

  1. Fix the workpiece in 3 jaw chuck
  2. face one end of the workpiece
  3. perform turning operation with a depth of cut of 0.5mm for the length of 80mm
  4.  check the diameter of the workpiece with a vernier caliper and make sure to achieve dia as per the drawing
  5. perform chamfering operation
  6. Removing the workpiece from the chuck and fixing the other end in the 3-jaw chuck
  7. face until you achieve the required length of 95mm
  8. perform the turning operation by taking each depth of cut of 0.5mm until you reach the size of 28mm
  9. repeat steps 4,5,6 and 7

PRECAUTIONS :

  1. wear safety devices like safety glasses and an apron
  2. check diameters repeatedly with vernier caliper and length by rule/scale
  3. follow this procedure properly
